ATLANTA (April 7, 2012) - The San Antonio Scorpions played to a scoreless draw against the Atlanta Silverbacks in their season opener Saturday night at Atlanta Silverbacks Park.

Playing in front of a sellout crowd of 5,000 fans, the Scorpions played their first NASL game and withstood the Silverbacks attack in the first half. Scorpions Goalkeeper Pat Hannigan dealt well with the Silverbacks offense, which included World Cup veteran Danilo Turcios. The Honduran midfielder was the first to create a scoring opportunity, shooting into the side of the net from close-range in the 17thminute.

The Scorpions fired back six minutes later when midfielder Kevin Harmse tested Silverbacks goalkeeper Daniel Illyes from 20 yards. The Hungarian goalkeeper could tip the ball out for a corner after a powerful shot from Harmse. The Scorpions and Silverbacks exchanged chances throughout the remainder of the first half, but neither team was able to finish their chances.

The Scorpions took control midway through the second half, forcing a pair of strong saves from Silverbacks Goalkeeper Illyes. In the 57th minute, forward Hans Denissen blasted a low shot that was punched out for a corner kick, and shortly after, forward Pablo Campos came close to putting the Scorpions ahead with a breakaway opportunity. Illyes came out and kicked away the Brazilian's effort, preserving the 0-0 score.

A pair of late efforts by defender Kohei Matsushita and Nico Colaluca nearly gave the Silverbacks an opening night opening night victory, but Hannigan was up to the task, earning the Scorpions a shutout in their first ever professional game.

The Scorpions return to San Antonio to play the Puerto Rico Islanders in the home opener on Sunday, April 15, for the much anticipated first ever Scorpions home game at Heroes Stadium. To purchase tickets, visit www.sanantonioscorpions.com or call 210-637-3411.

I would like to congratulate the team on a job well done. Your first game couldn’t have gone any better, you have all worked hard to get where you’re at and the sky is the limit. I am excited to see the team play your first home game and I will be there with great support. Keep up the good work and I will be screaming from the stands.
    Respectfully,
    Nicholas Juarez
